Bakers Bay
A private resort community in Northeastern Bahamas. The development is located on Great Guana Cay situated between the Sea of Abaco and the Atlantic Ocean. The 585-acre project is a resort development of 385 homes. Developed by Discovery Land Company, the project includes a Tom Fazio-designed 18 hole golf course, 200-slip marina, the Marina Village resort area, and a private club that includes beach club and spa. Our client purchased a ¾ acre lot on the Atlantic side of the island. At the time of our work no other houses were under construction along this strip of Ironshore Beach.

On our third attempt at working within the ridged architectural guidelines, we were able to get authorization to begin construction. Our earlier solutions were judged too modern, so we took characteristics of the pattern book provided by the developer and re-configured them into an architecture that would match the expectations and lifestyle of our client. Working with renowned Miami landscape architect Raymond Jungles, we created a twin dune, parallel to the untouchable original, to elevate the main level to engage the breaking waves. The tall ceiling of the two-story living space creates a naturally ventilating source exhausting the warmer air in favor to of the cool. Aware of the strong breezes coming off of the ocean at night, a large outdoor living space uses the walls of the house as a windbreak.
