13 Low Lane
We have been asked to do a 21st century version of the legendary Low Lane house. This new single-family home will inspire the imagination of today’s New England residents, just as the McKim Mead and White design did almost 150 years ago. This is a large house for a large family….a gathering place for three generations of sailors…providing access to one of the prime waterways in the country. Every occupied space provides a view of the Bay.

The propellor shaped plan is positioned to focus three levels of two broad wings towards the 240-degree view. Extensions of the floor slabs provide terraces for each level as well as shading solutions spaces below. The 10-acre site drops 50 feet in elevation to the banks of the Narragansett Bay. Two levels of our design sit on the crest of the hill, while the lower level is embedded into the face. The middle of the house defines the public space with a two-story living room. On the main level, the south wing of the house is for private usage with the kitchen/family room on the northern wing. The lowest level contains the guest bedrooms and the technical space requirements.
